Consider it off the beaten track – Most tourists do end up going to the western part of the country, which has a lot of wildlife and safari opportunities. This tour to the East combines some spectacular nature and landscape – namely the Sipi Falls – with culture and history in form of ancient rock paintings and visits to the local community.

Duration: 5 days/4 nights

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer Kampala – Sipi

We will pick you up from Kampala in the morning and start our journey towards eastern Uganda. We will stop over for lunch in Mbale and then continue to Sipi village located between beautiful hills and waterfalls. After settling down in Crow’s Nest, our accommodation for the night, and enjoying the stunning views of the waterfalls, we will go for a coffee processing tour. The Bugisu area, in which Sipi is located, is home to the Bugisu Washed Arabica coffee – one of the finest coffees in the world. On this tour you will learn how to pick, prepare and roast your own coffee beans – and enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee!

Day 2: Sipi Falls

In the morning, we will go for a 2 hour hike to the Sipi waterfalls. There are three waterfalls, located along the hillside. On the walk through lush tropical vegetation, you will enjoy great views over the Karamoja plains and get close enough to the waterfalls to actually get wet (if you’re not careful). The afternoon can be spend any way you like – relaxing with a book while enjoying the scenery or choosing between one of the more active options (at your own cost): rock climbing abseiling, hiking, archery, fly fishing…

Day 3: Ancient Nyero Rock Paintings in Kumi

After breakfast, we will leave for Kumi. The little town of Kumi is home to one of the oldest and biggest sets of prehistoric Rock paintings in Uganda. After eating lunch in Kumi, we will head out to visit the paintings and learn about their history and meaning on a guided tour. The Rock Paintings are dated back to the Iron Age and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of the paintings represent animals, concentric circles and canoes. We will then visit a local community and get to know about the local Teso culture and traditions.

Day 4: Jinja

Today we will head back west – first stop: Jinja. In Jinja we will take a boat ride out to the source of the world’s longest river, the Nile. After lunch in town, we will visit a local weaving workshop and learn about the process of weaving and how they make their beautiful fabrics. We will then head to Mabira Forest, where we will spend the night. You could head out for a short forest walk before dinner, if you still have the energy left (at own cost), or simply relax and enjoy the rainforest setting.

We can add in a day here fif you’d like to go White water rafting (grade 5) on the Nile or do any other of the exciting activities available in Jinja (Quad biking along the Nile, Bungee jumping, Horseback riding, Kayaking…). Please let us know at the time of booking.

Day 5: Mabira Forest

In the early morning you will go for a guided walk in Mabira Forest (2 hours). If you are interested in bird watching (and there are lots of different species of birds here – over 300!), early mornings are the best time to catch a glimpse. Mabira Forest is one of the last remaining rainforests in Central Uganda. It has an enormous biodiversity comprising over 300 bird species, over 300 tree species, 40 different mammals (including several types of monkeys) and 218 species of butterflies!

After the walk, there will be opportunity for more fun activities (at your own cost) such as the Mabira Forest Canopy Super Skyway (a network of ziplines 40 metres up in the trees) or taking a mountain bike trip through the forest to Griffin Falls. After lunch we will set off to return to Kampala. On the way, we will stop over at Sseszibwa Falls to enjoy the beautiful setting and learn about its cultural background on a guided tour.
